Fat Transfer
Fat Transfer is exactly like it sounds, the process of removing fat from one area of the body and moving it to another.
What is it for?
Many people will use the process of fat transfer to enhance areas of the body that have been depleted of fat during the aging process, usually in the face. Some people will use this process to enhance their lips, cheeks, chin, and even the area under the eye to eliminate a "hollow eye". It is also being used to augment the Buttocks, called a "Brazilian Butt Lift".
How is it done?
The surgery is performed by first doing a little liposuction in an area such as the outer thigh, where most of us are a little larger on one side anyway. The fat that is removed is then processed until it becomes very much like an auto collagen. This is then reinjected into the area that you are trying to plump up. After the initial harvesting of the fat, small amounts can then be stored for future injections. Not all of the fat will survive reinjection but 35% usually survives.
This is not a permanent procedure although most people can expect to retain approximately 25% of the fat that is injected at each injection. The fat that is stored is viable for up to 1 year after it is harvested. The patient can have a follow up injection no sooner than 1 month after the initial injection.
